Sound familiar?
  • "The grades are good, but the Gymi exam asks differently from school."
  • "The course is full, expensive, and the times don’t fit our week."
  • "In a group my child doesn’t ask when something is unclear."

The exam does not test school material as such, but whether your child can apply it. That is exactly what can be practised, one-to-one.

Gymi preparation as one-to-one tutoring: how I work

A course gives structure for everyone. One-to-one tutoring works on what your child needs. First I find out which basics from primary school are still shaky. Then we go through the exam’s problem types until the way to the solution feels familiar. Your child writes essays under exam conditions, and every text gets feedback with two or three points. We work with past exams from the canton and with my own materials, which I create for Gymi preparation. If you attend a course, we are happy to use its material too. One lesson a week from the autumn is enough for most children.

Online Gymi preparation is part of my online tutoring in Zurich. It costs the same as every other lesson, and all prices are on the website. How I work in the two exam subjects is shown on the pages on math tutoring in Zurich and German tutoring in Zurich. There is no guarantee of admission, but there is a clear assessment of where your child stands.

I live in Zurich and teach online, for families across the canton, from Winterthur and Uster to Lake Zurich. For the left shore of the lake and the Sihl valley there is a separate page on Gymi preparation in Adliswil, Thalwil, Horgen and Wädenswil.

What we practise

Math
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Reading word problems and turning them into calculations
  • Geometry: area, perimeter, solids
  • Solving and checking exam problems under time pressure
German
  • Reading comprehension: reading closely, backing up answers
  • Grammar: parts of speech, sentence parts, tenses
  • Essay: structure, word choice, spelling
  • Feedback on every text with two or three concrete points
Exam practice
  • Going through past cantonal exams problem by problem
  • Managing time and staying calm on exam day

What a lesson with me looks like

Online with me does not mean a learning video. We work with exam problems in math and German, and every step is written out clearly on the screen.

  • We meet on Google Meet

Your child and I see and hear each other the whole lesson. A link is all you need, nothing to install.

  • I write along on the iPad

With Apple Pencil and Goodnotes I write and draw neatly. Your child sees every step clearly on the screen.

  • School material or my own

Send me the school material beforehand and I prepare for it. You do not have to: I have my own, and I create my own exercises for Gymi preparation and practice.

  • A report for you afterwards

The same day by email: what we did, where it still sticks, the homework and the next step.

What you need: a laptop or tablet with a camera and a stable internet connection.

After every lesson you know what your child learned

This is what you get by email after every lesson. No chasing, no guessing.

  • What the topic was, what went well, where it still sticks
  • The same day, by email, in English
  • You see exactly what you pay for

Tutoring session report

Student
Leon, 5th grade
Subject
German

Tutor

Today Leon and I worked on the worksheet on sentence parts from school, then did one of my own exercises. Leon was much more focused than last week and asked questions on his own.

What we did

First we revised subject and predicate. With the question test ("Who or what?") Leon found the subject almost every time. Then we practised moving sentence parts around to see what stays together. I marked the parts in colour on the iPad, which clearly helped him.

What went well

Subject and predicate are solid. At the end Leon explained his method to me himself and marked a short text of eight sentences almost without mistakes.

Where it still sticks

In longer sentences with several parts before the verb he gets unsure and guesses. That is normal at this point. We need one or two more lessons until it becomes automatic.

Homework

A sheet with ten sentences: mark subject and predicate, write down the moving test for three of them. About 15 minutes. I will send you the PDF today.

Next steps

Next week we consolidate this and start the accusative object ("Whom or what?"). If a test on sentence parts is coming up, send me the date and I will prepare the lesson for it.

Leon was motivated, participated well and took a clear step forward. Looking forward to next week.

What families say about Gymi preparation

  • “Isn’t a Gymi course enough?”

In the course our daughter was one of many. With Lara every lesson is only about her gaps.

    Mother of a 6th grader

    Gymi preparation, 6th grade

  • “Isn’t it too late already?”

We only started in the autumn. Lara told us clearly what was still realistic before the exam. Then she began with the most important topics.

    Father of a 6th grader

    Gymi preparation, 6th grade

  • “My child gets nervous before exams”

Before every practice exam I had a stomach ache. With Lara I practised under time pressure so often that the real exam felt almost normal.

    Student, Langgymnasium

    Gymi preparation, math and German

  • “How can Gymi preparation work online?”

I was sceptical. Lara writes out every calculation on her iPad and corrects the essays directly on the screen. It works better than I expected.

    Mother of a 6th grader

    Gymi preparation, 6th grade

  • “The Kurzgymi is different, though”

I prepared for the Kurzgymi in Sek year 2. Lara knew the problem types and practised exactly the topics I was missing.

    Student, Kurzgymnasium

  • “What if it still doesn’t work out?”

Lara never promised anything, and I liked that. After every lesson I knew where my son stood and what was still missing.

I work with your child's school material or with my own, which I create for Gymi preparation and individual exercises. After every lesson you know what we did and what comes next.

What matters to me

  • Understanding before memorising, in every lesson.

  • Every question is allowed, even the third time.

  • Grew up bilingual in Singapore, Germany and Zurich. I talk to you in whichever language is easier.

Feeling nervous before the Gymi exam is normal. Confidence comes once a child has seen the problems many times.

That is why we practise the problem types of the Zurich exam, one-to-one and under time pressure. There is no guarantee of admission. But after every lesson you know where your child stands.

Questions about Gymi preparation

What is the best Gymi preparation in Zurich: a course or one-to-one tutoring?

That depends on the child. A course gives structure and a lot of material, but a child who doesn’t ask questions in a group is left alone with them. One-to-one Gymi tutoring works on what your child can’t do yet. Every essay gets personal feedback. Some families combine both. In the assessment I tell you what I think makes sense in your situation.

How much does Gymi prep cost in Zurich?

Group courses in Zurich usually cost between CHF 1980 and CHF 3340 for the whole programme. With me the trial lesson costs CHF 45. After that a lesson costs CHF 55, or CHF 50 in a pack of 10, the same for the Langgymnasium and the Kurzgymnasium. No subscription, no minimum term.

Does Gymi preparation work online, also from Winterthur or Uster?

Yes. Lessons take place on Google Meet, a link is all you need. Your child and I see each other for the whole lesson, and problems and essays are shared on the screen. Where you live does not matter: I work with families from the city of Zurich, Winterthur, Uster, Wetzikon, Bülach and the whole canton. The exam is the same everywhere.

Is there Gymi preparation for the Kurzgymnasium too?

Yes. From Sek year 2 or 3 the exam leads to the Kurzgymnasium, the shorter Gymnasium track. From 6th grade of primary school it leads to the Langgymnasium, the six-year track. Both lead to the Matura, the Swiss university entrance qualification, and the Vornoten, the school grades from the report card, count towards the result. In both cases the exam tests German and math. These are exactly the two subjects I teach.

When should you start Gymi preparation?

Many families start after the summer holidays of 6th grade, about half a year before the exam. That is enough if the basics are solid. If building blocks from 4th or 5th grade are missing, starting in 5th grade makes sense. In the assessment I tell you how much lead time I think is realistic in your case.

When is the Gymi exam in Zurich?

The central entrance exam of the canton of Zurich (ZAP) takes place every year in March, for the Langgymnasium from 6th grade and for the Kurzgymnasium from Sek year 2 or 3. The canton publishes the exact dates and the registration deadline on zh.ch. Your child’s school also informs you.
