Sound familiar?
  • "The words are learned in the evening and gone again in the test."
  • "My child understands English but doesn’t dare to speak."
  • "Present perfect, simple past: with tenses my child is guessing."

You learn a language by using it. That needs a place where mistakes are allowed.

How English tutoring works with me

First I look at where your child stands: Do they understand the text but can’t answer? Do they know the words but not the word order? Or is speaking practice missing? I explain grammar in German and practise it in English. New words come up in sentences. Part of every lesson is speaking. Because English is my second native language, I correct pronunciation and intonation along the way without interrupting the flow. Before tests we prepare in a targeted way.

Online English tutoring is part of my online tutoring in Zurich, and all prices are on the website. English does not count for the Gymi exam, German and math do. More on that on the page about Gymi preparation in Zurich. Families who speak English at home often need German tutoring more than English.

What a lesson with me looks like

Online with me does not mean a learning video. Your child speaks for the whole lesson, and words and grammar are written out clearly on the screen.

  • We meet on Google Meet

Your child and I see and hear each other the whole lesson. A link is all you need, nothing to install.

  • I write along on the iPad

With Apple Pencil and Goodnotes I write and draw neatly. Your child sees every step clearly on the screen.

  • School material or my own

Send me the school material beforehand and I prepare for it. You do not have to: I have my own, and I create my own exercises for Gymi preparation and practice.

  • A report for you afterwards

The same day by email: what we did, where it still sticks, the homework and the next step.

What you need: a laptop or tablet with a camera and a stable internet connection.

After every lesson you know what your child learned

This is what you get by email after every lesson. No chasing, no guessing.

  • What the topic was, what went well, where it still sticks
  • The same day, by email, in English
  • You see exactly what you pay for

Tutoring session report

Student
Leon, 5th grade
Subject
German
Date
18 September 2026
Tutor
Lara

Today Leon and I worked on the worksheet on sentence parts from school, then did one of my own exercises. Leon was much more focused than last week and asked questions on his own.

What we did

First we revised subject and predicate. With the question test ("Who or what?") Leon found the subject almost every time. Then we practised moving sentence parts around to see what stays together. I marked the parts in colour on the iPad, which clearly helped him.

What went well

Subject and predicate are solid. At the end Leon explained his method to me himself and marked a short text of eight sentences almost without mistakes.

Where it still sticks

In longer sentences with several parts before the verb he gets unsure and guesses. That is normal at this point. We need one or two more lessons until it becomes automatic.

Homework

A sheet with ten sentences: mark subject and predicate, write down the moving test for three of them. About 15 minutes. I will send you the PDF today.

Next steps

Next week we consolidate this and start the accusative object ("Whom or what?"). If a test on sentence parts is coming up, send me the date and I will prepare the lesson for it.

Leon was motivated, participated well and took a clear step forward. Looking forward to next week.

What parents say about English tutoring

  • “We speak English at home”

Speaking was never the problem, the grammar tests were. Lara practised exactly the rules the school asks for.

    Mother of a Sek student

    English, Sek year 2

  • “Our son is at an international school”

We needed someone who knows the international system. Lara read up on the school’s materials and speaks English with us.

    Father of a 5th grader

    English, 5th grade, international school

  • “My child doesn’t dare to speak”

In class my daughter hardly says a word. With Lara she talks the whole lesson, because nobody is watching.

    Mother of a Sek student

    English, Sek year 1

  • “Isn’t a learning app enough?”

The app tested words, nothing more. Lara notices when my son has only memorised something. Then she keeps asking until he can use it.

    Father of a 6th grader

    English, 6th grade

  • “At the Gymi my English isn’t enough any more”

At the Kurzgymi we suddenly had to write essays in English. Lara practised with me how to structure a text. Now I write without panicking.

    Student, Kurzgymnasium

    English, Kurzgymnasium year 2

  • “Isn’t primary school too early?”

Our daughter struggled with vocabulary in 4th grade. Lara practises with her in short, varied exercises. Now she looks forward to the lesson.

About lernform

lernform is online tutoring 1:1 with me. I grew up bilingual in Singapore, Germany and Zurich, know the Zurich and the international school system from my own experience and have supported 53 students in German, math and English from 1st grade to Gymnasium. I work with your child's school material or with my own, which I create for Gymi preparation and individual exercises. After every lesson you know what we did and what comes next.

What matters to me

  • Understanding before memorising, in every lesson.

  • Every question is allowed, even the third time.

  • Grew up bilingual in Singapore, Germany and Zurich. I talk to you in whichever language is easier.

Questions about English tutoring

How much does English tutoring in Zurich cost per hour?

The trial lesson costs CHF 45 for 60 minutes. After that a single lesson costs CHF 55, or CHF 50 per lesson in a pack of 10. The price is the same for every grade. No subscription, no minimum term.

Does online English tutoring work for kids?

Yes, especially for English: speaking and listening work over video just like at a table, and we share texts and exercises on the screen. Your child and I see each other for the whole lesson. From 2nd grade, when English lessons start at school in the canton of Zurich, it works well with short tasks and plenty of speaking.

My child doesn’t dare to speak English. What do you do differently?

One-to-one, nobody is listening to judge. I speak English with your child about things that interest them. I correct in passing rather than after every sentence. I grew up bilingual, so English is not a foreign language for me. Over time speaking becomes normal, first in the lesson, then at school.

Is the English tutoring taught in English or in German?

As much English as makes sense. Conversations, exercises and texts are in English. I explain grammar in German so your child really understands the rule. I adjust the balance to your child’s age and level.

We speak English at home. Does our child need German tutoring more?

Often, yes. Kids from English-speaking families rarely struggle with English, but they do in German and in math, because the language of the tasks is missing there. I teach both and work with many international families. I speak English with you, and the report after every lesson comes in English.

Is there English tutoring for the Gymi exam?

The Zurich entrance exam for the Langgymnasium, the six-year Gymnasium after 6th grade, tests German and math, not English. What I do help with is the start at the Gymnasium, when the pace picks up after the transfer. For the Kurzgymnasium, the four-year Gymnasium entered from Sek, we clarify in the assessment which subjects are tested.
