Sound familiar?
  • "My child hasn’t got the times tables down, and doesn’t understand word problems even when reading them."
  • "Homework takes an hour longer than it should every evening, with tears on both sides."
  • "At the parent meeting the teacher talked about gaps. But how do we close them at home?"

The earlier a gap is found, the smaller it is. In primary school it is usually still one building block, not a whole chapter.

How primary school tutoring works with me

Children at this age don’t learn from explanations alone. They need examples they know, short steps and the feeling that mistakes are part of it. In the first lesson your child reads a short text aloud, does a few sums and tells me what they are thinking. We work with the Lehrmittel, the teaching materials from school, or with my own exercises, depending on what helps your child more. The lesson is split into small parts: explain a bit, practise a bit, talk briefly, carry on.

Tutoring for primary school children is part of my online tutoring in Zurich. The price is the same for every grade, and all prices are on the website. What I do in each subject is described on the pages on math tutoring, German tutoring and English tutoring. From 5th grade the move up to Sek comes into view. For the entrance exam to the Langgymnasium there is Gymi preparation in Zurich.

What a lesson with me looks like

Online with me does not mean a learning video. With younger children I work in short, clear steps, and we see each other for the whole lesson.

  • We meet on Google Meet

Your child and I see and hear each other the whole lesson. A link is all you need, nothing to install.

  • I write along on the iPad

With Apple Pencil and Goodnotes I write and draw neatly. Your child sees every step clearly on the screen.

  • School material or my own

Send me the school material beforehand and I prepare for it. You do not have to: I have my own, and I create my own exercises for Gymi preparation and practice.

  • A report for you afterwards

The same day by email: what we did, where it still sticks, the homework and the next step.

What you need: a laptop or tablet with a camera and a stable internet connection.

After every lesson you know what your child learned

This is what you get by email after every lesson. No chasing, no guessing.

  • What the topic was, what went well, where it still sticks
  • The same day, by email, in English
  • You see exactly what you pay for

Tutoring session report

Student
Leon, 5th grade
Subject
German
Date
18 September 2026
Tutor
Lara

Today Leon and I worked on the worksheet on sentence parts from school, then did one of my own exercises. Leon was much more focused than last week and asked questions on his own.

What we did

First we revised subject and predicate. With the question test ("Who or what?") Leon found the subject almost every time. Then we practised moving sentence parts around to see what stays together. I marked the parts in colour on the iPad, which clearly helped him.

What went well

Subject and predicate are solid. At the end Leon explained his method to me himself and marked a short text of eight sentences almost without mistakes.

Where it still sticks

In longer sentences with several parts before the verb he gets unsure and guesses. That is normal at this point. We need one or two more lessons until it becomes automatic.

Homework

A sheet with ten sentences: mark subject and predicate, write down the moving test for three of them. About 15 minutes. I will send you the PDF today.

Next steps

Next week we consolidate this and start the accusative object ("Whom or what?"). If a test on sentence parts is coming up, send me the date and I will prepare the lesson for it.

Leon was motivated, participated well and took a clear step forward. Looking forward to next week.

What parents of primary school children say

  • “Isn’t online too early for my child?”

Our son is in 2nd grade and I had my doubts. In the trial lesson Lara kept him focused with short tasks. It works better than I expected.

    Mother of a 2nd grader

    Math, 2nd grade

  • “Homework ends in an argument at our house”

There were tears every evening, hers and mine. Since Lara explains the difficult topics, we do homework again without a fight.

    Father of a 3rd grader

    German, 3rd grade

  • “The teacher says it will come”

We didn’t want to wait until the gap was big. After the first lesson Lara named exactly what was missing. That reassured us.

    Mother of a 4th grader

    Math, 4th grade

  • “My child has enough school already”

I didn’t want to put even more pressure on her. The lessons with Lara are calm and she often laughs. She looks forward to them.

    Father of a 5th grader

    Math, 5th grade

  • “I’m worried about the move to Sek”

In 6th grade every mark suddenly counted. Lara strengthened our son’s basics in math and German before he moved up to Sek.

    Mother of a 6th grader

    Math and German, 6th grade

  • “Reading is a struggle for us”

Our daughter guessed words instead of reading them. Lara practises with her in small steps and writes to me after every lesson about what we can practise at home.

    Mother of a 2nd grader

    German, 2nd grade

What matters to me

  • Understanding before memorising, in every lesson.

  • Every question is allowed, even the third time.

  • Grew up bilingual in Singapore, Germany and Zurich. I talk to you in whichever language is easier.

Your child is not too slow. They need someone who explains the material at their pace.

I work patiently and in small steps, with the material from your child’s class. After every lesson you know what we practised and what helps at home.

Questions about primary school tutoring

How much does tutoring for primary school cost?

The trial lesson costs CHF 45 for 60 minutes. After that a single lesson costs CHF 55, or CHF 50 per lesson in a pack of 10. No subscription, no minimum term. You pay by invoice or Twint.

Math tutoring in primary school: what do children struggle with most?

With understanding, not with effort. Times tables are learned by heart instead of understood, and place value stays unclear. From 4th grade the basics for fractions and word problems are then missing. I first look at where your child lost the thread. Often the cause lies a school year further back.

Does online tutoring make sense for a child in 2nd grade?

It can work, but not for every child. What matters is a quiet place without siblings or toys in sight, a lesson split into short parts and a parent within earshot. With the youngest children I work with a lot of talking and short tasks. The trial lesson shows whether it fits. If I notice that your child doesn’t learn well in front of a screen, I tell you.

Do I need to sit with my child during the lesson?

In 1st and 2nd grade it helps if you are in the next room: for the technology, the worksheet and the break. You don’t have to learn along. From 3rd or 4th grade most children work with me on their own. That is also the goal: homework should become your child’s job again, not yours.

We don’t speak German at home. Aren’t the school’s DaZ lessons enough?

DaZ, German as a second language, covers the lessons at school. A child who speaks another language at home hears and practises much less German after school than their classmates. I close this gap lesson by lesson, using the material from your child’s own classroom. I grew up bilingual, so the assessment and the lesson report can also be in English.

Does tutoring help with the move from primary school to Sek?

Yes. The move to secondary school (Sek) after 6th grade is based on your child’s marks and the teacher’s assessment. I close gaps in math and German so your child starts Sek with solid basics. I can’t influence the placement decision, but I can make sure your child knows the material that counts in the school report.
