Sound familiar?
  • "My child says: I can’t do math."
  • "At home it works, in the test everything is gone."
  • "Fractions, percentages, equations: I don’t know how to explain it any more."

Usually it is not talent that is missing, but one building block that never quite set. We will find it.

How math tutoring works with me

Math builds on itself. A child who doesn’t understand fractions will struggle with percentages later. In the first lesson your child solves a few problems from the current topic and explains out loud what they are doing. That shows me whether the problem is understanding, technique or reading the question. Often the cause sits a few chapters further back. That is where we start, with the Zurich Lehrmittel and your child’s tests.

Online math tutoring is part of my online tutoring in Zurich. It costs the same as every other subject, and all prices are on the website. If the Gymi exam is coming up, the page on Gymi preparation in Zurich shows how I prepare for it. If word problems already get stuck at the reading stage, German tutoring often helps too.

What a lesson with me looks like

Online with me does not mean a learning video. We work through the problems together, and every step is written out clearly on the screen.

  • We meet on Google Meet

Your child and I see and hear each other the whole lesson. A link is all you need, nothing to install.

  • I write along on the iPad

With Apple Pencil and Goodnotes I write and draw neatly. Your child sees every step clearly on the screen.

  • School material or my own

Send me the school material beforehand and I prepare for it. You do not have to: I have my own, and I create my own exercises for Gymi preparation and practice.

  • A report for you afterwards

The same day by email: what we did, where it still sticks, the homework and the next step.

What you need: a laptop or tablet with a camera and a stable internet connection.

After every lesson you know what your child learned

This is what you get by email after every lesson. No chasing, no guessing.

  • What the topic was, what went well, where it still sticks
  • The same day, by email, in English
  • You see exactly what you pay for

Today Leon and I worked on the worksheet on sentence parts from school, then did one of my own exercises. Leon was much more focused than last week and asked questions on his own.

What we did

First we revised subject and predicate. With the question test ("Who or what?") Leon found the subject almost every time. Then we practised moving sentence parts around to see what stays together. I marked the parts in colour on the iPad, which clearly helped him.

What went well

Subject and predicate are solid. At the end Leon explained his method to me himself and marked a short text of eight sentences almost without mistakes.

Where it still sticks

In longer sentences with several parts before the verb he gets unsure and guesses. That is normal at this point. We need one or two more lessons until it becomes automatic.

Homework

A sheet with ten sentences: mark subject and predicate, write down the moving test for three of them. About 15 minutes. I will send you the PDF today.

Next steps

Next week we consolidate this and start the accusative object ("Whom or what?"). If a test on sentence parts is coming up, send me the date and I will prepare the lesson for it.

Leon was motivated, participated well and took a clear step forward. Looking forward to next week.

What parents say about math tutoring

  • “My child just doesn’t have a head for math”

Our daughter was convinced she would never get it. Lara noticed that place value was missing. Since that clicked, she does her sums without tears.

    Mother of a 4th grader

    Math, 4th grade

  • “How can math work online?”

I couldn’t imagine how you explain working out over a laptop. Lara writes every step on her iPad and my son works along on paper.

    Father of a Sek student

    Math, Sek year 1

  • “He can do it at home, but not in the test”

That was exactly our problem. Lara practises timed problems with him and goes through every test afterwards. He walks in calmer now.

    Mother of a Sek student

    Math, Sek year 2

  • “I can’t explain it myself any more”

With equations I was at my wit’s end. Now Lara explains, and I no longer have to play teacher in the evening.

    Mother of a Sek student

    Math, Sek year 3

  • “At the Gymnasium everything goes too fast”

I never fully understood functions in class. With Lara I can keep asking until it is clear.

    Student, Gymnasium

    Math, Gymnasium year 3

  • “Does one lesson a week make a difference?”

After the trial lesson Lara told us openly what was realistic. We stayed with one lesson a week, and after each one I know what the two of them are working on.

  • Understanding before memorising, in every lesson.

  • Every question is allowed, even the third time.

  • Grew up bilingual in Singapore, Germany and Zurich. I talk to you in whichever language is easier.

Your child is not bad at math. They missed one step, and everything after it builds on that step.

I find that step and explain from there, using the Zurich Lehrmittel. After every lesson you know where your child stands.

Questions about math tutoring

How much does math tutoring in Zurich cost per hour?

The trial lesson costs CHF 45 for 60 minutes. After that a single lesson costs CHF 55, or CHF 50 per lesson in a pack of 10. The price is the same for every grade. No subscription, no minimum term.

My child says they can’t do math. Can tutoring help with that at all?

Usually, yes. "I can’t do math" almost always means one building block is missing, for example place value or fractions. I look for that spot first and explain again from there. Once a child solves a problem on their own, the sentence changes too.

How does online math tutoring work when you have to write out your working?

Working and sketches appear on the shared screen, visible to both of us. Your child calculates along on paper and holds the problem up to the camera or takes a photo. The notes from the lesson are kept, so your child can look at them again before the test.

Do you work with the Zurich math Lehrmittel?

Yes. I like to work with your child’s Lehrmittel, worksheets and tests. For individual exercises and Gymi preparation I make my own materials. That way every lesson fits what is happening at school right now. This matters especially for families who don’t know the Zurich school system well yet.

How many lessons of math tutoring does my child need?

That depends on how far back the gap goes. A single test can be prepared in one or two lessons. If basics from earlier school years are missing, one lesson a week over a few months is realistic. After the trial lesson I tell you what I think makes sense.

Is there math tutoring for the Gymi exam as well?

Yes. Math is one of the two subjects of the Zurich entrance exam. We practise the exam’s problem types, close gaps from primary school and work accurately under time pressure. There is no guarantee of admission.
