Sound familiar?
  • "The Gymi exam doesn’t test what they learn at school. We only realised that in January."
  • "The course is in Zurich, the times don’t fit and there is the journey on top."
  • "We are in the middle of Gymi exam stress and feel left on our own."

The exam asks whether your child can apply what they have learned. That can be practised, one-to-one and without the trip to Zurich.

One-to-one lessons instead of a course: how I prepare

A course gives everyone the same programme. I work on what your child needs. First I find out which basics from primary school are still shaky. Then we go through the exam’s problem types, using past exams from the canton, until the way to the solution feels familiar. Your child writes essays under exam conditions and gets feedback on every text. The timeline is set by the exam on 8 March 2027 (the Gymi exam is the entrance exam for the Gymnasium, the academic secondary school). In autumn we close gaps, from January we practise under time pressure. One lesson a week is enough for most children.

I teach families from Adliswil just as much as from Kilchberg and Rüschlikon on the lake, from Thalwil, Horgen and Wädenswil, from Langnau am Albis in the Sihltal or from Wollishofen and the city of Zurich. Because I teach online, there is no journey. Your child sits at the table at home and I am there on the screen. The exam is the same for everyone, so the preparation also works for families on the other side of the lake or in the canton of Zug.

This page adds to my Gymi preparation in Zurich, where the process is described in detail. All prices are on the website. The pages on math tutoring and German tutoring show how I work in the two exam subjects. There is no guarantee of admission, but there is a clear assessment of where your child stands.

What we practise

Math
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Reading word problems and turning them into calculations
  • Geometry: areas, perimeter, solids
  • Solving and checking exam problems under time pressure
German
  • Reading comprehension: read closely, back up answers with the text
  • Grammar: parts of speech, sentence elements, tenses
  • Essay: structure, choice of words, spelling
  • Feedback on every text with two or three concrete points
Timeline up to the exam
  • Autumn: close gaps in the basics, first past exams
  • Exam registration from 1 January to 10 February 2027
  • January and February: exams under time pressure, essays with feedback
  • Exam on 8 March 2027

  1. Get a free assessment

Pick grade and subject, leave your number. I call you, ten minutes, free.

  2. Trial lesson on your topic

What a lesson with me looks like

Online with me does not mean a learning video. We see each other, talk for the whole lesson and work on exam problems. Your child stays at home for it.

  • We meet on Google Meet

Your child and I see and hear each other the whole lesson. A link is all you need, nothing to install.

  • I write along on the iPad

With Apple Pencil and Goodnotes I write and draw neatly. Your child sees every step clearly on the screen.

  • School material or my own

Send me the school material beforehand and I prepare for it. You do not have to: I have my own, and I create my own exercises for Gymi preparation and practice.

  • A report for you afterwards

The same day by email: what we did, where it still sticks, the homework and the next step.

What you need: a laptop or tablet with a camera and a stable internet connection.

After every lesson you know what your child learned

This is what you get by email after every lesson. No chasing, no guessing.

  • What the topic was, what went well, where it still sticks
  • The same day, by email, in English
  • You see exactly what you pay for

Tutoring session report

Student
Leon, 5th grade
Subject
German
Date
18 September 2026
Tutor
Lara

Today Leon and I worked on the worksheet on sentence parts from school, then did one of my own exercises. Leon was much more focused than last week and asked questions on his own.

What we did

First we revised subject and predicate. With the question test ("Who or what?") Leon found the subject almost every time. Then we practised moving sentence parts around to see what stays together. I marked the parts in colour on the iPad, which clearly helped him.

What went well

Subject and predicate are solid. At the end Leon explained his method to me himself and marked a short text of eight sentences almost without mistakes.

Where it still sticks

In longer sentences with several parts before the verb he gets unsure and guesses. That is normal at this point. We need one or two more lessons until it becomes automatic.

Homework

A sheet with ten sentences: mark subject and predicate, write down the moving test for three of them. About 15 minutes. I will send you the PDF today.

Next steps

Next week we consolidate this and start the accusative object ("Whom or what?"). If a test on sentence parts is coming up, send me the date and I will prepare the lesson for it.

Leon was motivated, participated well and took a clear step forward. Looking forward to next week.

What families on Lake Zurich say

  • “We would rather have someone local”

We thought so too. After the trial lesson it was clear that it doesn’t matter. Our son concentrates well with Lara and we save ourselves the trip to Zurich.

    Father of a 6th grader

    Gymi preparation, 6th grade

  • “The course takes up the whole afternoon”

With the journey there and back, the course afternoon was gone. Now the lesson is after dinner and my daughter still has time for herself afterwards.

    Mother of a 6th grader

    Gymi preparation, 6th grade

  • “We started late”

We only got in touch after the autumn holidays. Lara made a plan up to the exam and closed the biggest gaps first.

    Mother of a 6th grader

    Gymi preparation, 6th grade

  • “My child gets nervous before exams”

I always used to be very nervous before exams. Lara did practice exams with me under time pressure until I knew how to divide up my time.

    Student, Langgymnasium

    Gymi preparation, math

  • “Isn’t a Gymi course enough?”

In the course nobody noticed that our daughter was missing the basics of fractions. Lara saw it in the first lesson.

    Mother of a 6th grader

  • “In a course I don’t dare to ask”

In the course I never asked questions. With Lara I ask until I understand, with essays too.

Good preparation does not need a full classroom. It needs calm, time and the right problems.

I prepare your child for the Gymi exam online and one-to-one. The time you would spend travelling is left for breaks and homework.

Questions about Gymi preparation in the region

Is there Gymi preparation in Adliswil?

Yes. I prepare children from Adliswil and the neighbouring towns for the Gymi exam, online and one-to-one. The municipality of Adliswil also offers its own preparation course. One-to-one lessons add to a course like that, or replace it if the times don’t fit or your child doesn’t ask questions in a group.

Does my child have to travel to Zurich for Gymi preparation?

No. Lessons take place on Google Meet, a link is all you need. Your child sits at the table at home, with no trip to Zurich or Thalwil and no waiting outside the classroom. The lesson starts on time and ends after 60 minutes, and the time in between belongs entirely to your child.

When should we start preparing for the Gymi exam?

Many families start after the summer holidays in 6th grade, about half a year before the exam on 8 March 2027. That is enough if the basics are solid. If building blocks from 4th or 5th grade are missing, starting in 5th grade makes sense. Starting in January is also possible, and then we focus on the exam’s problem types. In the assessment I tell you what I think is realistic in your case.

Langgymnasium or Kurzgymnasium?

The Langgymnasium starts after 6th grade of primary school, the Kurzgymnasium after Sek year 2 or 3. Both lead to the Matura. Both exams test German and math, and the school report grades count too. I prepare children for both exams. A lesson costs CHF 55 for either, or CHF 50 in a pack of 10.

How much does Gymi preparation cost compared with a course?

Gymi courses in Zurich usually cost between CHF 1980 and CHF 3340 for the whole programme. With me the trial lesson costs CHF 45, after that a lesson costs CHF 55, or CHF 50 in a pack of 10. So ten one-to-one lessons cost CHF 500. No subscription, no minimum term.

Do you know the primary schools in the region?

I live in Zurich and know the Lehrmittel of the Zurich public schools under Lehrplan 21. The Gymi exam is the same across the whole canton, whether your child goes to school in Adliswil, Thalwil, Horgen or Wädenswil. What differs is where your child stands. That is why every course of lessons starts with an assessment.
