What a lesson with me looks like

Online does not mean a learning video. We see each other, talk the whole time and work on the tasks together.

  • We meet on Google Meet

    Your child and I see and hear each other the whole lesson. A link is all you need, nothing to install.

  • I write along on the iPad

    With Apple Pencil and Goodnotes I write and draw neatly. Your child sees every step clearly on the screen.

  • School material or my own

    Send me the school material beforehand and I prepare for it. You do not have to: I have my own, and I create my own exercises for Gymi preparation and practice.

  • A report for you afterwards

    The same day by email: what we did, where it still sticks, the homework and the next step.

Today Leon and I worked on the worksheet on sentence parts from school, then did one of my own exercises. Leon was much more focused than last week and asked questions on his own.

What we did

First we revised subject and predicate. With the question test ("Who or what?") Leon found the subject almost every time. Then we practised moving sentence parts around to see what stays together. I marked the parts in colour on the iPad, which clearly helped him.

What went well

Subject and predicate are solid. At the end Leon explained his method to me himself and marked a short text of eight sentences almost without mistakes.

Where it still sticks

In longer sentences with several parts before the verb he gets unsure and guesses. That is normal at this point. We need one or two more lessons until it becomes automatic.

Homework

A sheet with ten sentences: mark subject and predicate, write down the moving test for three of them. About 15 minutes. I will send you the PDF today.

Next steps

Next week we consolidate this and start the accusative object ("Whom or what?"). If a test on sentence parts is coming up, send me the date and I will prepare the lesson for it.

I work with your child's school material or with my own, which I create for Gymi preparation and individual exercises. After every lesson you know what we did and what comes next.

Questions expat parents ask

Does my child need this if the school already offers DaZ?

DaZ covers school hours. Most of a Swiss child’s German comes from outside school: TV, bedtime stories, overheard conversations. That is the gap. We do not replace DaZ, we add practice with the same material your child uses in class.

Can you talk to us in English?

Yes. I grew up bilingual in Singapore, Germany and Zurich and know both the Zurich and the international school system from my own experience. The assessment, the lesson reports and all communication with you can be in English.

Does my child have to be in a Swiss public school?

No. I tutor children in local schools and in international or bilingual schools. You can send me the school material beforehand and I prepare for it, but you do not need to: I have my own material.

How does a lesson work?

We meet one-to-one on Google Meet. In addition I write and draw on an iPad with Apple Pencil and Goodnotes, so your child sees every step neatly on the screen. After the lesson you get a detailed report.

How young can my child be?

From 1st grade. The trial lesson shows whether online works for your child. If it does not, I will tell you.

Will this get my child into the Gymi?

Nobody can promise that. What I promise: clear feedback after the trial lesson, focused work on German and math, and a report after every lesson so you see where things stand.
