Sound familiar?
  • "Since secondary school, math is a different subject: equations, percentages, variables."
  • "The pace at the Gymnasium is high. The first bad test has dented the motivation."
  • "My child is fourteen and doesn’t want tutoring. Least of all from me."

Teenagers don’t need control. They need someone who explains until it sticks, and who takes them seriously.

How tutoring for secondary school and Gymnasium works with me

At fourteen you learn differently than at eight. Teenagers want to know why something is the way it is. I start with what is happening at school right now: the next test, the current chapter, the problem that won’t work out. Your child explains out loud how they approach it. That quickly shows whether a basic from primary school is missing or the new material hasn’t been understood yet. Your child works alone with me in the lesson. After every lesson you get a lesson report in English.

Tutoring for teenagers is part of my online tutoring in Zurich. The price is the same for every grade, and all prices are on the website. What I do in each subject is on the pages for math tutoring, German tutoring and English tutoring. For the Kurzgymnasium exam from Sek year 2 or 3 there is Gymi preparation in Zurich, and for the test in spring of Sek year 2 there is Stellwerk test preparation.

What a lesson with me looks like

Online with me does not mean a learning video. Teenagers talk with me as equals, with no class listening in.

  • We meet on Google Meet

Your child and I see and hear each other the whole lesson. A link is all you need, nothing to install.

  • I write along on the iPad

With Apple Pencil and Goodnotes I write and draw neatly. Your child sees every step clearly on the screen.

  • School material or my own

Send me the school material beforehand and I prepare for it. You do not have to: I have my own, and I create my own exercises for Gymi preparation and practice.

  • A report for you afterwards

The same day by email: what we did, where it still sticks, the homework and the next step.

What you need: a laptop or tablet with a camera and a stable internet connection.

After every lesson you know what your child learned

This is what you get by email after every lesson. No chasing, no guessing.

  • What the topic was, what went well, where it still sticks
  • The same day, by email, in English
  • You see exactly what you pay for

Tutoring session report

Student
Leon, 5th grade
Subject
German
Date
18 September 2026
Tutor
Lara

Today Leon and I worked on the worksheet on sentence parts from school, then did one of my own exercises. Leon was much more focused than last week and asked questions on his own.

What we did

First we revised subject and predicate. With the question test ("Who or what?") Leon found the subject almost every time. Then we practised moving sentence parts around to see what stays together. I marked the parts in colour on the iPad, which clearly helped him.

What went well

Subject and predicate are solid. At the end Leon explained his method to me himself and marked a short text of eight sentences almost without mistakes.

Where it still sticks

In longer sentences with several parts before the verb he gets unsure and guesses. That is normal at this point. We need one or two more lessons until it becomes automatic.

Homework

A sheet with ten sentences: mark subject and predicate, write down the moving test for three of them. About 15 minutes. I will send you the PDF today.

Next steps

Next week we consolidate this and start the accusative object ("Whom or what?"). If a test on sentence parts is coming up, send me the date and I will prepare the lesson for it.

Leon was motivated, participated well and took a clear step forward. Looking forward to next week.

What parents and teenagers say

  • “My child doesn’t want tutoring”

Our son found tutoring embarrassing. With Lara he noticed that she takes him seriously. Now he gets in touch himself when a test is coming up.

    Mother of a Sek student

    Math, Sek year 2

  • “The grades count for the apprenticeship”

For her applications our daughter needed better grades in German. Lara practised texts and grammar with her, matched to what they were doing at school.

    Father of a Sek student

    German, Sek year 2

  • “I can’t keep up with the material any more”

I can no longer explain the Sek material to him. Lara can, and in the report I read what the two of them did.

    Mother of a Sek student

    Math, Sek year 3

  • “He won’t sit still at the laptop”

I was sure he would switch off online. Lara keeps asking questions and lets him do the calculations himself. There is no time left for the phone.

    Father of a Sek student

    Math, Sek year 1

  • “The probation period at the Gymi scares me”

During the probation period I got a failing grade in math. With Lara I closed the gaps from Sek. Now I can keep up in class again.

    Student, Gymnasium

    Math, Gymnasium year 1

  • “Only before tests, is that possible?”

I usually get in touch before big tests. Lara then goes through exactly the topics that will come up.

    Student, Sek A

    English, Sek year 3

I work with your child's school material or with my own, which I create for Gymi preparation and individual exercises. After every lesson you know what we did and what comes next.

What matters to me

  • Understanding before memorising, in every lesson.

  • Every question is allowed, even the third time.

  • Grew up bilingual in Singapore, Germany and Zurich. I talk to you in whichever language is easier.

In Sek every grade counts for the apprenticeship search or the Gymi. With teenagers that only works as equals.

Your child has a say in what we work on. I explain until it sticks, and after every lesson you get a short report.

Questions about secondary school tutoring

How much does tutoring for secondary school and Gymnasium cost?

The trial lesson costs CHF 45 for 60 minutes. A single lesson costs CHF 55, or CHF 50 per lesson in a pack of 10, the same as in primary school. No subscription, no minimum term. You pay by invoice or Twint.

Math tutoring for secondary school: which topics cause the most trouble?

Usually equations, percentages and proportionality, later powers and functions. Often the cause sits further back, though. A child who never understood fractions in primary school will struggle with equations in Sek. I look for that spot first and explain again from there, using your child’s Lehrmittel (the school textbook).

Is there tutoring if my child is already at the Gymnasium?

Yes, in math, German and English. At the Untergymnasium (the six-year Gymnasium track, entered after primary school) and in the first years of the Kurzgymnasium, it is often about keeping up with the pace and closing gaps before they pile up. I work with the material and notes from class. For the last years before the Matura, we clarify in the assessment whether the topic fits what I offer.

My teenager doesn’t want tutoring. How do you handle that?

That is normal at this age. The trial lesson is deliberately small: one topic, 60 minutes, no grades, no class listening in. Afterwards your child has a say in whether to continue. Many teenagers notice in the first lesson that it feels different when someone explains patiently. Nobody is pushed into continuing.

Do you prepare for the Kurzgymnasium entrance exam?

Yes. The Kurzgymnasium is the four-year Gymnasium track after Sek. The exam from Sek year 2 or 3 takes place in March and tests German and math, and the school grades count too. I work with past exams, close gaps from Sek and give concrete feedback on essays. There is no guarantee of admission.

Can my child move from Sek B to Sek A?

In the canton of Zurich, moving between the Sek levels is possible. Sek A is the more demanding level, Sek B the basic one. The school decides based on performance. I can’t influence that decision, but I can make sure your child masters the math and German that count for it. In the assessment I tell you how I see the situation.
