Sound familiar?
  • "My child reads the text and still doesn’t understand the questions about it."
  • "With an essay they sit in front of a blank page for half an hour."
  • "The same mistakes in every dictation, even though we practise at home."

You don’t learn a language by being tested, but by understanding, using it and getting feedback you understand.

How German tutoring works with me

German is made up of several parts that school often tests at the same time. I separate them first, so it becomes clear where the difficulty lies. For reading we practise a method: split the text into sections, say in one sentence after each section what it is about, back up answers with a quote from the text. I explain spelling and grammar as rules you can apply. For essays I work with your child’s real texts: first the structure, then sentence building and word choice, spelling last.

Online German tutoring is part of my online tutoring in Zurich, and all prices are on the website. German is one of the two subjects of the Gymi exam, more on that on the page about Gymi preparation in Zurich. Children with German as a second language get vocabulary and sentence patterns from their class’s Lehrmittel, the official Zurich school books. Often math tutoring helps too, because that is where word problems fail at the reading stage.

What a lesson with me looks like

Online with me does not mean a learning video. We read, write and revise the same text together.

  • We meet on Google Meet

Your child and I see and hear each other the whole lesson. A link is all you need, nothing to install.

  • I write along on the iPad

With Apple Pencil and Goodnotes I write and draw neatly. Your child sees every step clearly on the screen.

  • School material or my own

Send me the school material beforehand and I prepare for it. You do not have to: I have my own, and I create my own exercises for Gymi preparation and practice.

  • A report for you afterwards

The same day by email: what we did, where it still sticks, the homework and the next step.

What you need: a laptop or tablet with a camera and a stable internet connection.

After every lesson you know what your child learned

This is what you get by email after every lesson. No chasing, no guessing.

  • What the topic was, what went well, where it still sticks
  • The same day, by email, in English
  • You see exactly what you pay for

Tutoring session report

Student
Leon, 5th grade
Subject
German
Date
18 September 2026
Tutor
Lara

Today Leon and I worked on the worksheet on sentence parts from school, then did one of my own exercises. Leon was much more focused than last week and asked questions on his own.

What we did

First we revised subject and predicate. With the question test ("Who or what?") Leon found the subject almost every time. Then we practised moving sentence parts around to see what stays together. I marked the parts in colour on the iPad, which clearly helped him.

What went well

Subject and predicate are solid. At the end Leon explained his method to me himself and marked a short text of eight sentences almost without mistakes.

Where it still sticks

In longer sentences with several parts before the verb he gets unsure and guesses. That is normal at this point. We need one or two more lessons until it becomes automatic.

Homework

A sheet with ten sentences: mark subject and predicate, write down the moving test for three of them. About 15 minutes. I will send you the PDF today.

Next steps

Next week we consolidate this and start the accusative object ("Whom or what?"). If a test on sentence parts is coming up, send me the date and I will prepare the lesson for it.

Leon was motivated, participated well and took a clear step forward. Looking forward to next week.

What parents say about German tutoring

  • “German is not our first language”

We don’t speak German at home. Lara explains the grammar so that I understand it too. She writes the report for me in simple sentences.

    Mother of a 3rd grader

    German, 3rd grade

  • “My child doesn’t like reading”

Reading was a battle every evening. Lara reads texts with him that interest him. She also practises answering questions about the text.

    Father of a 5th grader

    German, 5th grade

  • “There’s nothing to be done about spelling”

I thought that for a long time. Lara collected the mistakes and saw that it is always the same rules. The two of them now practise those specifically.

    Mother of a Sek student

    German, Sek year 1

  • “How is an essay supposed to work online?”

Lara corrects the essay directly on the screen. My daughter sees every change and understands why the sentence is better that way.

    Mother of a 6th grader

    German, 6th grade

  • “I’m scared of the exam essay”

The essay in the Gymi exam was what worried me most. With Lara I practised making a plan in a few minutes.

    Student, Langgymnasium

    German, Gymi preparation

  • “I can practise with him myself”

We tried that and it usually ended in an argument. Since Lara took over the lessons, things are calmer at home.

About lernform

lernform is online tutoring 1:1 with me. I grew up bilingual in Singapore, Germany and Zurich, know the Zurich and the international school system from my own experience and have supported 53 students in German, math and English from 1st grade to Gymnasium. I work with your child's school material or with my own, which I create for Gymi preparation and individual exercises. After every lesson you know what we did and what comes next.

What matters to me

  • Understanding before memorising, in every lesson.

  • Every question is allowed, even the third time.

  • Grew up bilingual in Singapore, Germany and Zurich. I talk to you in whichever language is easier.

Your child is not lazy. Often they just don’t know how to plan a text and revise it.

We practise that step by step, with the texts and exercises from school. After every lesson you know what we worked on.

Questions about German tutoring

How much does German tutoring in Zurich cost per hour?

The trial lesson costs CHF 45 for 60 minutes. After that a single lesson costs CHF 55, or CHF 50 per lesson in a pack of 10. The price is the same for every grade. No subscription, no minimum term.

Does online German tutoring work as well as in person?

For German, online is practical: texts are shared on the screen, your child can type essays or take a photo of them, and we both see the corrections at the same time. Your child and I see and hear each other for the whole lesson. The trial lesson shows whether it works for you.

We don’t speak German at home. Isn’t DaZ at school enough?

DaZ, the German as a second language support at school, covers the hours at school. But a large part of the German a Swiss child hears comes from home. That is the gap we fill: one-to-one, with the material from your child’s class. It does not compete with DaZ, it adds to it. I am happy to speak English with you.

Can my child learn essay writing in German tutoring?

Yes, because an essay is mostly craft: finding an idea, planning a beginning, middle and end, varying the sentences, reading the text again. Your child writes a text and I give back two or three concrete points. The next text gets better in exactly those places.

How do you prepare German for the Gymi exam?

In German, the Zurich entrance exam tests reading comprehension, language analysis and an essay. We work with past exams and the task types that come up there. Every essay gets feedback. There is no guarantee of admission.

Do you also help with dyslexia?

I am a tutor, not a therapist. For diagnosed dyslexia, specialist therapy is the right way. Tutoring can at most add to it. Whether that makes sense in your situation is something we clarify in the free assessment.
